Manchester invitational, 2004

The Hackers won the 1st Manchester invitational tournament which was jointly hosted by the Lions and Cubs at their Trafford Metrovicks base. Six teams competed for the prestigious 'six softballs in a cardboard box' trophy, with five Manchester teams being joined by Sheffield Sting. Lions, Cubs, Gamblers, Hackers and Sonics represented the home City and whilst the Growlers did not take part as a team most of the entrants had a Growler or two hidden away somewhere in their line up. The Hackers showed their strong 2003 league form was no fluke by demolishing all comers, whilst most exciting finish was recorded in the Lions Cubs encounter which ended in a draw when the potential winning Lions run tripped and fell between 3rd and home.

Everyone that took part seemed to enjoy themselves and we'll certainly be doing it again. We'll also try and get the temperature turned up next time, though at least it was dry ! Umpires Simon Cunningham and Andy Shepheard did a sterling job, many thanks to them and to everyone that turned up and made it such a successful day.

Is it summer yet ? - the Lions in winter
